Biography

A Life Defined by the Fells and the Pen.

Simon McCall is a contemporary author and artist in digital/new media whose work is deeply rooted in the landscapes and legends of Northern England. Living and working in Cumbria, his creative process is a constant dialogue between the written word and visual expression.

Combining the disciplines of art and writing, Simon’s literary works often possess a cinematic quality, painting vivid pictures of the human condition against the backdrop of the wild Cumbrian fells. His novels explore themes of isolation, heritage, and the thin veil between reality and folklore.

Previously exhibited at the Florence Arts Centre, and finalist in the prestigious Anthology Magazine International Creative Awards, Simon is a British contemporary New Media artist, and author of ‘Digital & AI Art’ (Amazon & Kindle Unlimited).

Inspired by the landscapes of the English Lake District and seascapes of the Cumbrian coast, his style utilises colours, textures, light and perspective to represent, rather than recreate, landscape scenes.

When not at his writing desk or digital studio, Simon can be found navigating the high ridges of the Lake District, which serve as his primary source of inspiration for both his prose and his atmospheric landscape paintings.

Fiction by Simon McCall

“Tougher than Jack Reacher and more haunted than the Winchester brothers. There’s a new reluctant hero in town…and he’s British!” A Kindle Customer

Cumbria: a land of brooding fells, mist-shrouded lakes, and secrets that have slumbered since the last Ice Age. But when the “static” on the fells resolves into something deadlier than the weather, only one man can stand between the human world and the ancient entities of folklore.

Meet Connor “Mac” McClymont. A retired Royal Military Police investigator with a face carved from granite and eyes that miss nothing, Mac is a man haunted by a war he never truly left. Living as a nomad in “The Badger”, a black-and-white, military-spec Land Rover ambulance, he seeks only the quiet of the road. But in the rugged Lake District, the veil between reality and myth is wearing thin.

Across eight interlinked stories, Mac is pulled into a secret, eternal war as the Warden, a reluctant border guard marked with a silver scar and sworn to protect the unseen boundaries between Natural and Supernatural. From the soul-crushing cold of the Skiddaw Ghost and the territorial nobility of the Fae of Elva Hill, to the predatory hunger of the Bassenthwaite Eachy and the ancient malevolence of the Genius Loci, Mac must face the monsters that legends forgot to tell us were real.

Armed with an investigator’s razor edge, silver-tipped rounds, and the weight of a bloody past, Mac must navigate a landscape where the ancient rules of myth are the only ones that matter.

The hunt is on. The border is breached. And for Connor “Mac” McClymont, the watch has just begun.

Cumbria – an ancient corner of England, rugged and remote. The Romans built a wall to keep things out, but they never dealt with what was already here. The Norse, the Celts… they left their mark, and their myths. And myths are just memories of things that were, and often, things that still are.
Someone’s got to deal with these supernatural creatures, and guess who drew the short straw?!

Creatives, artists, artists-to-be, and art lovers…here is the book you’ve been waiting for.

I crossed over to the ‘Dark side’ and started creating digital art years ago, and I’ve never looked back. But I’m frequently asked the same questions…

  • What is digital art?
  • Is it really art?
  • Is digital art “cheating”?
  • How can I start creating digitally?
  • What tools do you use?
  • I’ve created a digital artwork…now what can I do with it?

So let’s explore these questions together, because the answers will be different for everyone!
